Kenyan Bishop snatches man's wife after presiding over their wedding

August 24, 2019

Bishop Wangivi of Joy Springs Church in Kiambu, Kenya has been accused of snatching the wife of a man whose wedding he presided over.
The distraught husband, John Kanyua said he lost his wife of 26 years, Leah Wambui to the randy Bishop after he approached her to become an assistant pastor in his church. The businessman admitted not taking the Bishop's consistent admiration for his wife seriously until he took off with his wife.
Kanyua revealed that he got suspcious of his wife's amorous relationship with the Bishop after he started visiting his house in the morning, spending the entire day locked in with her. The Bishop however ran away with his wife after he sought the intervention of the local administration and members of the clergy.
“This fueled the issue further as the pastor later ran away with my wife and children and rented a house in a nearby market where they live,” he said.
He further disclosed that he has been contacted by his wife's parents to accept repayment of the dowry he paid to them to pave way for the new wedding of their daughter. Kanyua hower said he refused the offer.
“This is unacceptable and I wouldn’t sit back and watch someone take my family. If the government does not intervene, I will choose my ways. It has taken me a lot to grow the family all those years. I will not allow the wedding to continue. I can also seek legal redress. Let her stop soiling her name and ask for forgiveness, then I will take her back,” he said.
The Bishop's wife of 34 years, Agnes Wangivi also confirmed the incident. The mother of three recalled having Leah over for family dinners though in the absence of her husband and on invitation of her own husband.
"I strongly objected the appointment, but he was determined to have his way. I confronted Leah and threatened her not to play games with my husband. She looked innocent, and I gave in.
“ I started questioning their friendship. I confronted Kanyua to keep his wife away from my husband, but he seemed blindfolded. My husband developed cold feet on his family and ran away to Leah in 2015,” she said.
Agnes said she still cannot understand why her husband got tired of her despite the challenges they went through to build their lives in their younger years.
“We have gone through a lot when we started the church to grow it. To have all the property we have, we went through a lot, and then someone wants to throw it away by marrying a stranger. I can’t allow this,” she said.

Kaduna Central: Tribunal Dismisses PDP Candidate’s Petition

August 24, 2019

The National and State Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Kaduna has dismissed the petition by the Senatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Mr. Lawal Adamu.
Mr Adamu’s petition was dismissed on Saturday for failure to provide concrete evidences to back his claims.
He had approached the tribunal asking to be declared winner of the election and nullify the election of Senator Uba Sani of the All Progressives Congress as senator of Kaduna Central Senatorial District, alleging that the election was characterised by massive rigging and other irregularities by the ruling party in connivance with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies.
Delivering a judgment that lasted over two hours, Chairman of the three-man tribunal, Justice Abubakar Suleiman, said that the PDP candidate’s petition has no substance and lacked merit.
He explained that the petitioner failed to present convincing evidence that the election was rigged in favour of the defendant, hence the tribunal dismissed his petition.
One of the counsels to the defendant, Frank Ikpe, described the judgement as wonderful, while the Kaduna state PDP chairman, Hassan Hyet in his reaction, expressed displeasure with the judgment, accusing the APC government of succeeding in ridiculing the security agencies and INEC.
He however, added that his party will seek further advice from its legal team.

August 24, 2019

Justice A.T. Mohammed of the Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State has convicted and sentenced two persons, Nura Hassan and Uchenna Iwuoha to a fine of N100,000 each.
The convicts were arraigned on Friday by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Port Harcourt’s Zonal Office, on one- count separate charge bordering on illegal dealing in petroleum products without appropriate licenses.
A statement from the EFCC said the offence was contrary to Section 4 (1) of the Petroleum Act, Cap P10 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN) 2007 and punishable under Section 4 (6) of the same Act.
The charge read, “That you Nura Hassan, being the driver on board a DAF Truck with registration number ZUR 219 YL on or about the 22nd day of November, 2017 at Abonema within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court did deal in petroleum products to wit: loading illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 4 (1) of the Petroleum Act, CAP P10 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN) 2007, and punishable under Section 4(6) of the same Act”.
The convicts pleaded “guilty” to the charge when read to them.
In view of their pleas, the prosecuting counsels, F.O. Amama and S. Chime prayed the court to convict and sentence them accordingly.
The defense counsels, O.N. Ofordile and P.C. Dike did not oppose the prosecution counsel’s prayers.
Justice Mohammed, thereafter, convicted and sentenced Hassan and Iwuoha to a fine of 100,000 each and ordered that that the content of the trucks they were arrested with should be forfeited to the Federal Government.
The convicts were intercepted by troops of the Nigerian Army, 6 Division, Port Harcourt in 2018 and 2019 at different locations.
They were said to be loading and distributing AGO using different trucks without appropriate licences.
The duo were later handed over to the EFCC for further investigation and prosecution.

Police Fire Tear Gas As Clashes Return To Hong Kong Streets

August 24, 2019

Hong Kong riot police on Saturday fired tear gas and baton-charged protesters who retaliated with a barrage of stones, bottles and bamboo poles, in another tense bout of violence.
The city has been gripped by three months of street protests that started against a proposed extradition bill to China but have spun out into a wider pro-democracy movement.
An uneasy peace had descended this week but that was broken on Saturday as thousands of demonstrators — many wearing hard hats and gas masks — marched through the industrial Kwun Tong area, where they were blocked by dozens of officers with shields and batons outside a police station.
Frontline protesters pulled together a barricade of traffic barriers and bamboo construction poles, spray-painting walls with insults directed at the police.
As the afternoon wore on some fired stones from slingshots, prompting a charge from police wielding batons and pepper spray.
Tear gas swept across the road as protesters retreated, leaving a trail of broken bottles and at least one small fire in their wake.
Several of the black-clad protesters were detained as officers swept through, with police justifying their charge on “a large group of violent protesters” who had set fires and hurled bricks.
The city had appeared to have pulled back from a sharp nosedive into violence, with the last serious clashes taking place a week and a half ago just after protests paralysed the financial hub’s airport.
Tension flickered throughout Saturday’s march, where dozens of the most radical demonstrators known as “braves” had gathered, battle-hardened by a three-month street campaign.
“I understand being peaceful will not solve the problem,” 19-year-old student protester Ryan told AFP, giving one name.
“The government won’t respond to peaceful protest. If I am arrested it is because I come out to speak for justice.”
Hundreds of thousands marched peacefully last Sunday, as a key protest group sought to regain the moral high ground in a city shocked at the level of violence.
But Saturday’s face-off underscored the dangerous deadlock into which the city has sunk — with the government unmoving in the face of protester demands, and demonstrators stubbornly refusing to leave the streets.
China has used a blend of intimidation, propaganda and economic muscle to constrict the protests in a strategy dubbed “white terror” by the movement.
Hong Kong-based airline Cathay Pacific has sacked staff over their political activities, while the MTR — the city’s metro operator — has been pilloried for closing stations after Chinese state-media accused it of offering an “exclusive” transport service to protesters.
‘No future’
Protests started against a bill that would have allowed extradition to China, but have bled into wider calls for democracy and police accountability in the semi-autonomous city.
Protesters say Hong Kong’s unique freedoms are in jeopardy as Beijing tightens its political chokehold on the city.
Soaring living costs and few job opportunities have also driven many of the mainly young protesters to the streets.
Hong Kong’s police force have become the target of the protesters’ ire for their perceived heavy-handed response to the months of demonstrations.
Scores of “braves” dug up bricks and tied metal barriers together a few hundred metres from the police as they appeared to dig in for more clashes.
Scuffles continued into the night including in the working-class district of Wong Tai Sin.
One frontline protester explained his motivation for joining the street struggle.
“The government chose not to solve the problem through communicating with the protesters,” Lueng told AFP.
“I don’t see our future facing this regime, so gradually I stepped closer and closer to the front line.”
Older Hong Kongers are divided on the motivation and tactics of the movement which has brought unprecedented chaos to a city once known for its safety and stability.
“The youngsters who come out have put their future at stake… they are doing this for Hong Kong,” 65-year-old Dee Cheung told AFP earlier, before explaining why he joined the protests.
“There might be some things we don’t agree with, like the ‘braves’ who tend to charge. But let’s think about why they do that?”

US Holds Talks With Taliban Over Peace In Afghanistan

August 24, 2019

The US and the Taliban met in Doha on Saturday, an American source close to the negotiations said, resuming potentially decisive talks to allow Washington to drawdown militarily in Afghanistan.
“Talks resumed this afternoon,” the US source said.
The second day of the two sides’ ninth round of dialogue had been due to begin Friday but “both sides decided to postpone it until Saturday”, the Taliban’s Doha spokesman Suhail Shaheen said, citing “other engagements”.
“We have made progress and are now discussing the implementation mechanism and some technical points,” he told AFP on Saturday, referring to discussions that took place on Thursday.
“The agreement will be completed after we agree on these points,” he said.
Any deal would be announced before the media as well as representatives from neighbouring countries and China, Russia, and the United Nations, he added.
The US, which invaded Afghanistan and toppled the Taliban from power in 2001, wants to withdraw thousands of troops but only in return for the insurgent group renouncing Al-Qaeda and curbing attacks.
Washington is hoping to strike an agreement with the Taliban by September 1 — ahead of Afghan polls due the same month, and US presidential polls due in 2020.
The Taliban claimed on Saturday to have killed seven members of the US military in an attack on a convoy near Bagram airfield north of Kabul.
Colonel Sonny Leggett, a spokesman for US forces in Afghanistan, said some local businesses had been damaged in the attack but denied coalition or US troops were hurt.
“Rather than taking responsibility for, and apologising for, the harm they bring to innocent Afghans and their businesses, the Taliban spread lies about the attack,” Leggett told AFP.
On Wednesday, two US soldiers were killed by small arms fire in Faryab province in northern Afghanistan, the Pentagon said.
Shaheen, the Taliban spokesman, had said the deaths should have a “positive” impact on the talks in Doha.

A soldier identified as R. A. Nata’Ala was crushed to death on Friday in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
The incident was said to have occurred when a heavily loaded truck lost control around Iyana Mortuary area of the metropolis.
Channels Television gathered that the truck marked JJJ 833 XW and laden with stone granite, was coming from Idi-Aba end of Ajebo-Ijaiye Road, when the incident occurred around 10:30am.
It was learnt that the driver of the truck who lost control due to brake failure, veered off his lane and killed the soldier.
The security operative, who was said to be riding a motorcycle alongside other vehicles, had been stopped at the intersection by the traffic light when the truck hit him.
An eyewitness told Channels Television that a female who was on the motorcycle with the soldier escaped death as she jumped off the bike before the truck dragged the motorcycle towards a culvert where the victim was slammed.
The female passenger, who was said to also be a soldier, immediately called some of their colleagues from 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamala, Abeokuta, who hurriedly came to evacuate the remains of the deceased.
The driver of the truck was reported to have abandoned the truck and bolted from the scene for fear of being lynched by angry mob.
Another eyewitness who was at the scene of the accident said there was panic in the area as residents and motorists feared military officers may unleash terror in the area.
The spokesman for the Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incident.
He also said the remains of the deceased have been taken to the morgue at State General Hospital, Ijaye.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) says it has caught two additional fake corps members at the orientation camp in Katsina State.
NYSC State Coordinator, Ahidjo Yahaya, confirmed this in a statement by their Public Relations Officer, Mr Alex Obemeata.
He explained that the two corps members were apprehended following a report from the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Shu’aibu Ibrahim, that the two ladies were carrying fake certificates.
“I got a security report from the DG that the two of them were carrying fake certificates. Base on that, he set out the security network to trap them and they were trapped.
“He said the two corps members had confessed to the offence. We will like to follow due process in handling the case by arraigning them before the camp’s court today (Saturday) before they would be demitted and decamped,” said Yahaha.

One of the two corps members was identified as Offor Chinelo Blessing with registration No. KT/19B/3696 and call-up No. NYSC /ISU/2019/260/22 from Imo State University said to be carrying fake result in B.Sc. Insurance and Actuarial Science.

12 Killed As Boko Haram Attacks Niger Village

August 24, 2019

A night raid blamed on Boko Haram has left a dozen villagers dead in southeastern Niger on the frontier with Nigeria, a local official said Saturday.
The attack on Friday night in the border district of Gueskerou, is the latest to hit the Diffa region near Lake Chad, which is crisscrossed by militant groups and traffickers who murder and kidnap people in local communities as they compete for money and influence.
“Twelve villagers were killed on Friday at around 8:00pm (1900 GMT) by Boko Haram elements,” a local elected official told AFP. He said eleven of those killed had been shot, but did not give further details.
The Gueskerou area, abutting the Komadougou Yobe river that provides a natural frontier between Niger and Nigeria, has been exposed to years of killings and kidnappings at the hands of the Islamist extremist group Boko Haram.
In March, two attacks in the area left eight civilians and seven police dead.
Boko Haram, loosely translated as “Western education is banned”, wants to create a hardline Islamic state.
A regional military coalition is battling the group, but at least 27,000 people have been killed in Nigeria alone.

I saw indecency in public space and I reacted - Belinda Effah speaks on criticizing Tekno's video

August 24, 2019

Belinda Effah while making a clarification on why she called out Tekno over his 'Lekki semi-nude girls' video, said she saw indecency in the public space and reacted not knowing who created the nuisance.
Also reacting to the backlash she faced after passing off her criticism on social media, the Nollywood actress stated that she wasn’t attacking anyone but was only voicing her disappointment.
“Honestly, no one is perfect but we should strive to lead exemplary lives. I saw indecency in the public space and I reacted, not knowing who created the nuisance. I wasn’t attacking anyone but just voicing my disappointment. It’s the same attitude we carry into our everyday life; not caring about the other person.
"We just do things because we can. I don’t have anything against anyone. But if you could be a little considerate towards other people’s feelings; maybe Nigeria would get better. When we damn all consequences just to prove a point, then who is going to build the nation? I believe that the change we so desire starts with us. It starts with you" she said.
On how women are portrayed in the entertainment industry, Belinda Effah expressed her disappointment and also pointed out that there are a lot of decent women in Nollywood who are not spotlighted because they are modest.
“I don’t like the way women are portrayed in the industry but people speak based on what they see or perceive. We, actresses, need to lay good examples. If we want to flaunt our wealth, we should also explain the source of wealth to the fans. If you can’t explain it, then live a humble life. We invite our fans into our lives by the unnecessary display of wealth and relationships, but when things go sour, we expect the fans to stay away from our business.
"How is that even possible when we are the ones that invited them in? Fans have fangs and they desire blood or nothing. Life is simple, and we should stop making it complicated. There are a lot of decent women in Nollywood but they are not spotlighted because they are modest. The bad eggs are usually used to generalise Nollywood women. If I do something good, no one speaks about it, but if I do something bad, that’s the one everyone gets to know. Let’s give the good Nollywood women some credit too" she told Saturday Beats.

LIB reported that the music executive had written “Stop allowing motivational speakers to drive you into a place of delusion and intense confusion. Not everyone will be an entrepreneur.” The heated exchange with Alex Ekubo ensued after the actor dropped a comment which read “Ubi, you are the pilot of the flight. Awon inspire to desire, to perspire.”
However while followers are still waiting to see how the brewing feud will end, the MMMG boss said he has moved on from that as Alex has apologized.
“He (Ekubo) was only joking, but I didn’t get the joke. He has already sent a message to apologise. It really wasn’t that serious. Dino Melaye has described the All Progressives Congress (APC) Smart Adeyemi as his 'political wife', in reaction to his sack as senator representing Kogi West Senatorial district in the red chamber.
Recall LIB reported that a Dino Melaye was sacked as the senator representing the Kogi West Senatorial district by a three-man panel of the Tribunal led by Justice Anthony Chijioke. The tribunal also ordered a fresh election.
Noting that there were two rulings from the Tribunal while being featured as a guest on Channels Television, Dino who contested the election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stated that the minority judgement was delivered by the chairman of the panel and he described it as “exclusive and wonderful”.
He however faulted the judgement of the two other members of the Tribunal who ruled against him. The Kogi-born lawmaker added that the tribunal's ruling was aimed at distracting him from his governorship ambition.
“I want to assure you that Smart Adeyemi is my political wife; I defeated him in 2015, I defeated him in 2019 and any day any time, he is my political wife,” the embattled lawmaker insisted.
“I want to say that I cannot be distracted and I will not be distracted. My name is Daniel; I will not fall … I am focused on my governorship ambition and we will get it.
“The only time there will be election for the seat of the Senate in Kogi West is after I am sworn in as the governor of Kogi State.
“That will necessitate vacancy but before then, there will be no by-election as a result of attempted robbery that is going on right now.”
“Spiritually we are already in the court of appeal; physically we will be there on Monday. The only election that will be conducted is the governorship election that I will win. My mandate is secured, my mandate is guaranteed,” he added.

Jamaican man spends 82 days in jail for bringing honey into US

August 24, 2019

A Jamaican man identified as Leon Haughton was detained for almost three months in the United States after bringing in bottles of honey from the Caribbean island that customs agents mistakenly believed to be liquid methamphetamine.
Haughton’s long ordeal began on December 29th 2018 at Baltimore-Washington International Airport when customs agents had a dog sniff his bags. Inside they found three bottles duly labelled as honey that Haughton, a 45-year-old father of three, uses to sweeten his tea.
According to the charging document, the agents suspected him of transporting liquid methamphetamine, and placed him in detention. Laboratory results from Maryland took more than two weeks to arrive: they were negative. Haughton thought that was the end of it. He was wrong.
The bottles were sent to a second laboratory in Georgia after the first was judged to be insufficiently equipped to analyze the liquids. Although he had a green card granting him legal residence in the United States, Haughton’s arrest set in motion a detention process with the US immigration service.
His lawyer had enormous difficulty contacting immigration authorities and for good reason. The US government had been partially shut down as a result of a budget impasse between President Donald Trump and Democrats over his demand for funding to build a wall on the border with Mexico.
The tests in Georgia, meanwhile, finally confirmed that Haughton was indeed transporting honey. He was freed on March 21, 82 days after he returned from vacation. Unable to work for three months and far from his children, Haughton lost his two jobs as a cleaner and construction worker. “They messed up my life,” he told the Post, looking back on a bitter ordeal that even honey will be unable to sweeten.

'Slavery still exists, we must take action' - President Buhari marks 400th anniversary of slave trade abolition with article in Washington Post

August 24, 2019

President Muhammadu Buhari has called for the abolition of slavery in all modern forms in a opinion article he published in The Washington Post to mark the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition.
See the article below...
Four centuries ago, the first 20 documented African slaves arrived on the shores of Virginia. In the years that followed, millions more were shipped in dehumanizing conditions across the ocean and enslaved. Slavery had, of course, existed before. But this indicated the beginning of a mechanized trade that saw human beings reduced to property on an unprecedented scale.
Despite the fact that descendants of African slaves have made valuable contributions across society, they are still dealing with the effects of this poisonous legacy. They still have to navigate its everyday manifestations, such as discrimination, racism or lack of access to resources and opportunities.
This must not be overlooked or forgotten. Yet, as we reflect on this day, International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and Its Abolition, it is clear slavery did not only thrive then. It still thrives today. Across the world it is estimated there are as many as 40 million men, women and children living in forced servitude. They are the industrial victims of a business many believe was abolished hundreds of years ago. They are the modern enslaved.
Their exploitation appears in many guises, though usually unrecognized as slavery. Many victims are unseen, hidden beneath opaque supply chains. Others are hidden in plain sight, entrapped by circumstances that rob them of autonomy. In any case, their labor, often dangerous, is no product of choice, and its conditions are self-perpetuating. In Africa, its modern forms include debt bondage, the enslavement of war captives, commercial sexual exploitation and forced domestic servitude.
Holding people held against their will, controlling their movements and forcing them to work for the sole profit of others — wherever they are — is slavery today and always. The abolitionists of the 19th century succeeded more than any before: By working to extinguish the transatlantic slave trade that had claimed 15 million victims, they laid the groundwork to ensure it did not manufacture millions more. But their work is not done. We must take up their examples as we forge a path forward to eliminate modern-day slavery in all its forms.
Slavery, once again, has become entwined in the global economy — and it is largely unseen. For instance, most of us might know in principle that the mining of cobalt crucial to our smartphones might have used forced labor. But what do we know of those that experience it? Just as personal testimony and resulting public pressure led to the passing of the Act for the Abolition of the Slave Trade in Britain in 1807, these stories must be told and used to inform policy.
Once heard, they can elevate visceral reactions, driving the public pressure needed to ensure the application of anti-slavery laws. One distinction from then and now is important: the costs. From records, adjusted for today’s prices, the cost of a human-being-as-property was valued on average at $40,000. Today, it is just $90, sometimes even lower. We must remember that slavery is not simply a campaign of hatred; it is the pursuit of profit. One way to extinguish it in its current forms, therefore, is to make it economically unfeasible.
This means making sure that any anti-slavery laws have bite, come with strong penalties and are enforced. It is also vital to have a robust tip-off and reporting system. Where this once meant detecting ships, today the signs are less conspicuous. The public must be shown how to see what is hidden in plain sight, particularly signs of suspicious behavior. This might seem broad. But vagueness should not give rise to reluctance to report anything that could be smuggling or forced servitude.
If something doesn’t look right, report it, for you could be securing another human’s freedom. In Nigeria, our anti-trafficking agency has rolled out the “Not for Sale” campaign to protect against the deceptions of human smugglers, helping those who might be vulnerable to false promises see through the ruse and say no. These prevention programs are crucial. The appearance of slavery today might have changed.
The institution has not. There are no radical solutions to conjure, only political will. But on this, we can learn from the past, the shadows in which modern slavery proliferates today. It is not enough to mark this 400th anniversary. We must use it as a platform to eliminate slavery in all its present-day forms. We should reflect in memory to find a better future, one that should ensure freedom for all.

August 24, 2019

Ugandan actress Anne Kansiime's boyfriend, Skylanta seems to have had enough of being trolled over his look and he has dragged his critics over it.
Skylanta said the troll comments took a toll on him before now, but he developed a thick skin after he saw a video of Ugandan social critic Frank Gashumba saying that anyone you talk about is bigger than you.

Telling his critics to focus on getting themselves out of poverty instead of tormenting him, Anne Kansiime's boyfriend further revealed that he has forgiven them all. The Ugandan reggae star wrote;
“I have seen many people troll me on Facebook saying I look like Scooby doo( that actually caught me off guard), saying am way too small ( I don't have the size of a real man) whatever that means!!!! And many other random insults from a few rotten apples (just like how my teacher Nyeko Makmot used to refer to heeiiraazz).
"At first it used to bother me and then I saw that video where Frank Gashumba was saying that "the mere fact that you are discussing sheilla means that she is bigger than you"
"Most of these people that preach negativity are coiled up in their 1 room apartment(English for muzigo) Chewing on a Rolex from last night (Been there, done that) wishing they were in this small man's shoes. I am a Christian and I will follow the words of our Lord Jesus Christ "Forgive them father they know not what they do" But also I think this ka hot mama has everything to do with my peace of mind!!!”

Kansiime and Skylanta started dating in Decemvber 2018, 11 months after her marriage to Gerald Ojok packed up.
